 QUESTION:  Using the Elements and Principles of Art, critique this artwork Two Cats by Franz Marc:

BAD ANSWER:

I like this artwork because it has cats in them.  One is licking itself which is funny.  The other is looking down like an idiot, so I don't like the yellow cat.  I think they belong to the farmhouse in the background.

GOOD ANSWER:

The artwork Two Cats by Franz Marc has an interesting composition.  The focal points seem to be conflicting because my eyes jump from the orange spot on the blue cat, to the bright red leaves, to the orange reflection in the pond, to the yellow cat.  I think my eye is being led around because of the repetition of organic shapes, especially soft, circular ones.  The artwork is not highly realistic, it is stylized with bright colors and a little value around the edges of the shapes.  The artwork has a little depth because the artist used overlapping and adjusting the size of objects as it goes back in space, like the tiny little house in the upper left hand corner.  The artist makes the cats pop out by using contrasting colors, the blue cat is on an orange background, and the yellow cat is on a blue background.  Overall, I think the artwork is too chaotic for my liking because of too much variety in colors and shapes, despite liking the subject matter.

Digital Art: Edit your Music Videos 5/28/14 Sub Plan

Good morning!

I ran into an issue yesterday when trying to upload your video into Windows Movie Maker.  It does not recognize .MOV files (which are what our cameras capture in!).  So, we need to convert our movie files from .mov to .mp4.  To do that you need to download a program, and then follow the steps below.

GO TO -------->  THIS LINK HERE!

Click Download Now in the up per right hand corner.

A new window will pop up asking if you would like to save this file.  Click Save File!

When the download is complete, Click on the Download Arrow (lit up green) in your opened Web Browser.  Your screen will go dark and ask if you want to allow the program to run because it's downloaded from the internet. Press YES!

This is when the Installer is going to start.  Hit ACCEPT.  Don't click on any of the extras and hit FINISH.

The program will open automatically.

Now the easier part!

Click: Add File
Browse your files and choose a movie file.
Output Format:  .mp4
Save to Folder:  Click Browse and choose where you want the files to save to.  (The desktop is pretty easy!)

CLICK CONVERT!

Do this to all of your video clips!

Intro to 3D Art: Environmental Art

ENVIRONMENTAL ART 


WHAT IS ENVIRONMENTAL ART?

In a general sense, it is art that helps improve our relationship with the natural world. There is no definition set in stone. This living worldwide movement is growing and changing as you read this.
Much environmental art is ephemeral (made to disappear or transform), designed for a particular place (and can't be moved) or involves collaborations between artists and others, such as scientists, educators or community groups (distributed ownership).


WHO IS ANDY GOLDSWORTHY?

Andy Goldsworthy is a brilliant British artist who collaborates with nature to make his creations. Besides England and Scotland, his work has been created at the North Pole, in Japan, the Australian Outback, in the U.S. and many others.

Goldsworthy regards his creations as transient, or ephemeral. He photographs each piece once right after he makes it. His goal is to understand nature by directly participating in nature as intimately as he can. He generally works with whatever comes to hand: twigs, leaves, stones, snow and ice, reeds and thorns.








YOUR PROJECT?

You are going to gather multiple materials from nature and manipulate them into an interesting piece of art.  You may only use natural materials, so glue, scissors, etc. is not available.  First we will take a nature walk, gather materials, then bring them inside and sketch ideas using nature as inspiration.  You will then choose a place around the school to form an artwork, and take a picture of your final piece.  You will then leave it to let nature take it's course.  We will check up on it a few days later to see if it's still there!

Ceramics: Pop Art Slab Box

Your Project:  Pop Art Slab Box

You are going to create a hard slab box in the style of Pop Art.  You will learn how to properly dry our pieces, cut them to precise measurements, and construct without cracking.  You will also learn how to transfer images onto leather hard clay for a repeated Pop Art design.

Sketch:

Dimensions -- You will need to figure out the dimensions of your slab box.  You have to take into consideration the thickness of the clay when creating the sides.  You also need to measure for a lid.


Design -- You will need to choose 1 image to duplicate on all 4 sides of your box (5 if you want to put it on the lid).  It can be an image from popular culture, or a portrait of someone/something that you want to colorize in Pop Art colors!

Digital Art: Music Video

ALAS!  The final digital art assignment!  Let's go out with a bang!

Your Project:  Music Video

You are going to work in groups of 2 or 3 to create a music video for a song of your choice (school appropriate).  You will use your artistic visions and learned editing skills to enhance the song with video.  Here is a GREAT example of a student made music video for the song Radioactive by Imagine Dragons.


Criteria:

Song:

The song must be school appropriate.  You may bring in the mp3 of the song, or I know how to get it from YouTube for free.  (ask me!)

Sketch:
Deside on a concept that will enhance the song through video.  You may do something with a story line like the video you just watched, or do something more artistic like the song Moving by Travis.


Draw out the 'frames' of the scenes and choose your actors/objects/locations.  Also plan which scenes will be filmed in which order.  If props are needed, bring them by Monday!

Film:
I have 3 cameras that take video.  You will use those to film and upload to the computer.  There are a few settings on the camera, like black and white, that you can play with.

Edit:
You will use Windows Movie Maker to edit your film.  There are transitions, styles, and ways to add text to make the video look smooth and professional!

Always give credit to the artist you used, also to the actors and editors!

Digital Art: Artist Board Game

Your Project:  Artist Board Game

You are going to create a board game that is about a famous artist or art movement, i.e. Salvador Dali or the Surrealists.  You will create the board that you play on, the 'pieces', and any cards you may need to draw.  You may use other board games as inspiration.






Criteria:

-Your board will be made from (4) 8.5" x 11" pieces of paper.  So make your artwork 17" x 22" and use grid lines to divide it into 4.
-You must have spaces to travel throughout the board.
-Visually your board needs to connect to the artist or art movement
-You must have 5 spaces that relate to the artist, i.e. 'Vincent cut off his ear, move back 2 spaces'
-You must make at least 4 player pieces
- If your board pulls cards, design them!  You do not need a FULL deck, but a small variety that we can make copies of!

We are going to print these and play them on a Friday!!!  :-)

Your Project:  Found Object Hand Sculpture

You are going to cast your hand with plaster gauze, then enhance the form of the hand with found objects.  You must find 1 object that you can get multiples of (examples:  M&M's, tooth picks, paper clips, cheetos etc).  You need to attach the found objects onto your hand to enhance to form, so you need to think of positive & negative space, pattern, color, and emphasis!

Assignment #1  - Reflection
In this assignment, you'll reflect on what you've done so far to get a better picture of what you should do for your final painting.  You can use all of your art classes here at Westville for this reflection.

Write full paragraphs for each of the following.
If possible, include illustrations.





a) What was a project you did in art class (this year or previous years) that you think was unsuccessful.  Why was it unsuccessful?  What could you have done better?

b)  What was a project that you did in art class that you think was very successful?  What did you get right in this project?  Have you used what you did well in this project in subsequent projects?

c) What is something that you wish you had been able to do in art class but never got around to?   Why didn't you get around to it?  How could you incorporate this into your final acrylic painting project?

d) What is your favorite art piece (not made by you or anyone here atWestville )?  What do you like about this art piece?  How can you steal from this art piece in your own work?  This one should have an illustration.

These words or phrases should include: Major themes, any additional media you want to use, and style choices.
